The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on 15 June 2006 in New York and observed in countries like Japan, Uganda, Gambia, Sweden, Israel, Nigeria, Ireland, Canada, Korea and India South Africa joined them in 2007 where over 3000 seniors took to the streets to show their abhorrence of elder abuse.

The objectives of this day are:

o         to increase public awareness and knowledge of the issue;

o         to promote education and training of professionals and paraprofessionals in identification, treatment and prevention;

o         to further advocacy on behalf of abused and neglected elders; and

o         to stimulate research into the causes, consequences, prevalence, treatment and prevention of elder recognise elder abuse and neglect.

One of Age-in-Action's core business is to initiate and promote programmes aimed at advancing the status, well being, safety and security of vulnerable and needy older persons. The organisation does regular training on the prevention of elder abuse and also networks with other stakeholders to ensure the best intervention and care of victims.
